The Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois� primary mission is to enhance the quality of life for people with sickle cell disease and their families.
Facts and Statistics
Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that occurs in one of every 500 African Americans.
Though normally the red cells are round, in some individuals some of the red cells are shaped like a farmer's sickle. They're called sickle cells and the disease produced by them is known as Sickle Cell Anemia.
There is no cure for Sickle Cell Anemia. Those who are born with it will have the disease for their whole life.
